Something is rotten in the state of....

        Double Tragedy

This past week Ben and I attended another stage production of Shakespeare's masterpiece, Hamlet-- a timeless play that includes all the elements of a great thriller:  Greed, murder, corruption, revenge, bribery, madness and suicide.

Amazingly enough, within the same week we have been witnessing the continuously unfolding modern-day story that seems to include all of the same elements--in our own food production industry:

The main cast:  Chemical and Bio-Technology Industries like Monsanto, Cargill, Syngenta, Dow, DuPont and Bayer and many other minor characters.

The plot:

Greed:  The desire to control the world's food supply.  Make money at any cost.  They even help pay for their own awards--like the prestigious World Food Prize:

Murder:  Of plants, animals and perhaps even the humans that eat them.

Corruption:  Across the country, University scientists are funded by Bio-Tech Corporations  (e.g. $50 million to UC Berkeley)  Faulty science and outright lies are constantly fed to government leaders and the public.  Honest, independent scientific research is suppressed.

Revenge:  Any scientist who learns the truth and speaks out is systematically fired, publicly shamed and demonized.

Bribery:  Thousands of lobbyists from Big Oil, Big Chemical and Big Bio-Tech companies pay millions of dollars to buy power.  Even Big Food: Witness the recent Washington State lawsuit alleging that The Grocery Manufacturers Association Against GMO Labeling has been  laundering money to hide the names of participating donors:

Madness: Human health, the well-being of our planet and God's natural order of things, are totally ignored.

Suicide:  Monsanto's purposely withheld information to the Indian government led to the bankruptcy and subsequent suicides of over 250,000 Indian farmers.

This time it is not just a play.  We need to be wise consumers.  Check out the Non-GMO Shopping Guide:   http://www.nongmoshoppingguide.com/shopping-guide.html

If we simply stand by as spectators and guinea pigs, I'm afraid that in the end it is we and Nature who will cry out with Hamlet:  In this harsh world draw thy breath in pain to tell my story.

Jeffrey M. Smith tells the story in the following documentary:
