INVISIBLE ME...

I am NOT a soloist...that’s why I raised children!

Yesterday, at the last moment, one of my more vocal musician friends asked me to provide a piano accompaniment for her solo in church. I was happy to accommodate her knowing that if I dropped a few notes, the faithful would not notice. (For some reason, the faithful believe that with God "last minute" means He will somehow make up for what normally would take hours of practice. Since I am more musical than faithful, I skipped Sunday School so I could practice.)

This occasion once again brought to mind a question I have often asked myself:   "Why am I more an accompanist than a soloist?" Because I am happier in obscurity!   I can get away with dropping notes as long as I keep a steady rhythm, do everything I can to enhance the performance and nothing to get in the way of the soloist!   That’s an art too, isn’t it?   Staying out of the way?

So, here's to the invisible "you" who are performers!  My sincerest applause!

Obscurity
There is something to be said for fame–
that glittered glory that excites the senses to heights of ecstasy.
I am content to capture bits of color here below
and silently wait to shower some unsuspecting soul
with my rainbow.

haha! I love the "more musical than faithful" part. It is an art to stay out of the way. Obscurity is my choice too, but I have to practice as much as a performing star, just to stay out of the way! Kinda sounds like a lose lose.

You are such a fun writer to read...I never doubted you would be given you produced two daughters who are also talented with words.

I liked this post...I used to be one who wanted to be the performer (though never had the talent to be) but now I am very comfortable in obscurity and prefer it over the limelight. In other areas of life of course...I can listen to music like a pro though.

I love the little poem at the end and just might stick it in my notebook! Keep posting Judy!

Ditto on the "more musical than faithful" bit. Aren't we taught, "faith without works is dead?"

I love your poem. I love the imagery of capturing bits of color.

I'm TOTALLY the same way, LOL... I'm much happier accompanying people (even when I get "performance-ability-envy") than I am when I'm on the spot. (I'm honestly a very mediocre pianist, especially being rather out-of-practice, but I tend to be a serviceable accompanist, LOL!) I've learned that it's a different gift, though, really - and being able to support someone in their expression really matters! :) Creating the beauty that facilitates and accentuates someone else's beauty is its own special talent. :)

So true, I find my favorite spot is accompanying too. Thanks for the insight. Love the poem.
