INVISIBLE OSAMA BIN LADEN DAY ~ WITH SUGAR

This is not going to be a popular post.  Mother's Day is coming and we are all expecting the usual candy and flowers, right?  Just as we celebrate the demise of Osama Bin Laden, this additional news shatters all our joy.  Sugar is poison.  What!  That's right, the New York Times reports on the extensive research of Dr. Robert H. Lusig, M.D. and tells us that sugar is toxic.  That's going to put a big damper on Mother's Day!

Dr. Lustig, with a mass of evidence to back up his claims, explains that sugar is sugar, whether it's the white granulated stuff – commonly known as sucrose – or high fructose corn syrup.  And his stance has nothing to do with calories, according to the NYT: "It's a poison by itself," he says.
"If Lustig is right, then our excessive consumption of sugar is the primary reason that the numbers of obese and diabetic Americans have skyrocketed in the past 30 years," the NYT says. "But his argument implies more than that. If Lustig is right, it would mean that sugar is also the likely dietary cause of several other chronic ailments widely considered to be diseases of Western lifestyles — heart disease, hypertension and many common cancers among them."  (NYT)
Let's see, Halloween is over, Thanksgiving is over, Christmas is over, New Year's Day is over, Valentine Day is over and Easter is over and six months' worth of birthday cakes is over so Mother's Day could be the day for reformation.  Watch the movie Big Sugar: Sweet, White and Deadly and begin the boycott.  Or, you can just choose to believe that Lusig is wrong and indulge.  Bake a cake in honor of Invisible Osama Bin Laden Day!

I read an article about this last week and it's really made me rethink the amount of sugar I eat and especially what I feed my kids. The problem is, sugar is so delicious and in just about everything. It's a hard habit to change, but definitely worth trying to do. I think even the littlest change makes a difference.

I've been enjoying reading your "morning musings"--keep it up!

my problem is I don't think I can be happy without chocolate in my life...and nuts... The fact that that makes me Cathy is nothing but shameful, and makes me cringe. Aak!

Too bad we couldn't get rid of Bin Laden by sending him sugar! :)
